How to Measure Your Head For a Wig

Most wig caps are made to be adjustable. But if you would like your wig to be made to fit your head, please follow the instructions below.

To measure the circumference of your head for a wig, take the tape measure and place it at the middle of your forehead at the hairline. Then run the tape around the head, behind one ear, around the nape of the neck, behind the other ear, then back to the front at the hairline (see image).

If your size falls between two cap sizes, going for the larger cap gives you more leeway to alter to a smaller size and less discomfort.

Here are the 3 main measurements to guarantee the right fit:

Head Circumference:
This measures the distance around your head. Starting at the center of the front hairline, place the tape flat against your head, going just above the ear towards the back of the head, keeping the tape at the nape of your neck and go around to the opposite side of your head, just above the opposite ear and returning to the center of the front hairline. This is the head circumference measurement.

Front to Nape:
This measures the length of your head from the front to the nape of your neck. To determine where the nape of your neck is, tilt your head back and look up. Where your neck bends and may even develop a skin fold, is where your nape is. You want the bottom of the wig to sit right above this area so that when you do tilt your head back that far, your wig will not shift on your head. This area is often right at the occipital bone, but be sure to take the measurement with your neck bent down so that you are looking at your shoes. Starting at the front hairline, measure directly across the middle top of your head to the area that you have determined is your nape.

Ear to Ear
Measure your head from the top of one ear, over the crown to the top of the other ear. Your wig should settle into your natural hairline. The back of the wig should come down to the natural hairline (nape) in the back. Zola Hair wigs have an adjustable strap, elastic band which allows you to adjust the circumference of your wig for the best and most comfortable fit.

Choosing the Right Wig Length

We know choosing the right wig is really hard that’s why we are going to give you a few key facts on how to measure the length of hair wig. You may not think that length is that important but it is crucial! Wig length is an important part of the choosing process as the way the wig falls will determine how well it suits your face. However, you also must measure your head size and choose the best for you as described above.

Tip: The hair length should be from the head top to the hair bottom as the hair is straight. The curly and wavy are processed from straight wigs, so in the same length, curly and wavy wigs will be shorter by 1-2 inches (it depends on how deep the curl is) than straight wigs.

Tip: Measure with a. tape measure from the middle of your head down to whichever length you prefer to determine which wig length to purchase.

Tips For Measurement

We sometimes use some shorter hairs to make the wigs look more natural just like the hairs are growing on the scalp with different hair lengths. The hair length shown on our website is the longest part of the hair. Only the longest hair can reach the length.

When you measure the curly and wavy hair wigs, the hair can’t become very straight although you may pull it out. Therefore, the length may be a little shorter or longer.

Please Note

If you are ordering a curly wig, the hair length can be drawn up approximately 2-3" from the curl depending on how tight it is. For waves, it can draw up approximately 1-2". Therefore, you may wish to order a little longer for curly or wavy textures to accommodate the drawing up of the hair and to achieve the full length desired. If the hair of the wig is longer than what you desire, you can have it expertly cut by a stylist.

Choosing the Right Wig For Your Face

To achieve a natural, stunning look, it’s important to take time finding a wig that not only complements and enhances your natural appearance but also feels comfortable and gives you confidence.

Things to Consider When Choosing Your Wig

There is no right or wrong when it comes to choosing a wig, however, there are factors to consider that’ll help determine what type of wigs will suit you best. Here are a few pointers and tips to ensure you have the basics covered when making your big purchase.

Face Shape

Choosing a wig depending on your wig

When choosing a wig, it’s important to consider your face shape so that you can match different wig styles to emphasise your facial features. Listed below are different types of face shapes and the wigs that work best.

Oval

If you have an oval face shape, lucky you! This is considered the ‘perfect facial shape’ of them all and can be matched with almost every wig style and colour. Although, straight wigs with middle partings look best, try to tie your wig into a sleek ponytail and let the hair fall over one shoulder for a professional, stylish appeal. If you have a small forehead and a lower hairline, however, go for a side-swept fringe look instead.

Round

If you have a round face, find a wig that shapes your face and creates a narrower appearance. Long and short wigs without fringes, and middle partings work beautifully. Off centre partings also work well as they attract the eye to one part of the face, rather than the middle. Alternatively wigs with longer layered fronts that can be volumized also work well.

Square

Square face shapes call for longer layered bobs, either straight, curly or wavy styles, that help to soften a harsh jawline and slim the face. Avoid any style that’s bluntly cut, like a blunt bob as this will accentuate your jaw creating a boxy effect, rather focus on increasing volume and thinning the sides to soften your overall look.

Heart

Heart shaped faces are ‘top heavy’ therefore you want to balance out your look by adding volume to the chin with your wig. This can be hard to achieve with a hairstyle, however, so shaping your wig around the eyes can also compliment your style. Anything too short tends to create a boxy look, aim for a wig that has longer layers and avoid short layers.

Diamond

If you have a diamond shaped face, you’ll have wider cheekbones and a narrower chin and forehead, therefore a wig with thin or fine sides will help to reduce the width at the widest point of your face and create a slimmer look. Go for a bob wig, either straight or curly, these styles will suit you best.

Oblong

Oblong face shapes are best suited to voluminous curly or wavy wigs that have full sides. This helps to create more of an oval face shape and will flatter your facial features exquisitely. In addition, you could go for a with that has a fringe or bangs which also helps to shorten your face shape for a more symmetrical overall look.

Pear

For pear shaped faces, your answer is bob wigs. Whether you prefer straight, curly or wavy bobs, a bob wig will help to cut off the width of a wider jaw and focuses the attention on all the right places. Choose a full layer wig with added volume or opt for a shaggy style. Equally, avoid any jaw length wigs or straight cut styles as these will harshen your overall look.
